Finding Internal Calm in a World of Chaos: Tools for HR Professionals & Other Leaders
In today’s politically charged, fast-paced, constantly connected world, business leaders (HR and others) are expected to juggle competing priorities, navigate uncertainty, and drive results—often without a moment to pause. Yet, the most impactful contributors know that true clarity and resilience come from within. Finding internal calm isn’t a luxury; it’s an HR & leadership necessity.
Drawing from my coaching tools (iPEC coaching, Positive Intelligence (PQ), positive psychology, and yoga therapy) here are three powerful exercises designed to help you cultivate calm amidst the chaos:
1. Shift Your Energy with the iPEC Energy Leadership Framework
iPEC’s Energy Leadership Index teaches that we operate from different energy levels—ranging from catabolic (draining) to anabolic (growth-oriented). When the world throughs you in a spin, take a moment to assess your energy level:
Exercise:
Pause and rate your current energy from 1 (low) to 7 (high).
Ask yourself: Is this energy serving me or draining me?
Reframe the situation by shifting to a higher energy level. For example, if you're feeling angry or stuck (Level 2—Conflict), try viewing the challenge as an opportunity for growth (Level 5—Opportunity). Take one small action to positively move it forward (ruminating and worrying or badmouthing others would not meet our ‘positive action’ focus).
2. Activate Your Sage Brain with Positive Intelligence (PQ) Tools
PQ teaches us that our minds often default to "Saboteur" thoughts—fear, stress, judgment—that drain our mental resources. Activating your "Sage" (wise) brain helps you respond with creativity and empathy instead.
Exercise:
Take 2 minutes for a quick PQ rep: Close your eyes and focus on a simple physical sensation—rub your fingertips together and notice every ridge.
Breathe deeply as you focus on this sensation, letting go of any disruptive thoughts.
Repeat whenever you feel overwhelmed to quickly reset your mental state.
3. Gratitude Grounding from Positive Psychology
Gratitude is scientifically proven to increase feelings of well-being and reduce stress—key ingredients for calm leadership.
Exercise:
At the start of your day, write down three things you’re grateful for.
Reflect on why each item matters to you and how it supports your leadership journey.
Share one of these points of gratitude with your team—it not only boosts your mood but fosters a positive team culture.
Or, learn about the science: Dr. Robert Emmons – A leading gratitude researcher and professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis. His studies have shown that practicing gratitude increases happiness and reduces depression. His landmark book, Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier, outlines numerous studies demonstrating how gratitude practices can improve overall well-being, sleep, and stress resilience.
Why Internal Calm Matters for HR Professionals & Other Leaders
When you cultivate inner calm, you lead with clarity, empathy, and strength. These tools help you move from reactive to proactive leadership, allowing you to inspire confidence—even in the midst of chaos.
Try integrating these exercises into your daily routine and watch how they elevate both your mindset and leadership presence.
